HISTORY

Living and working in Adams County has changed dramatically from the county’s first beginnings. Originally, Adams County was part of Arapahoe County until November 1902 when it became its own county. Prior to that Colonel Jack Henderson settled on a large island along the South Platte River about seven miles southwest of Brighton. He came to this area to strike it rich during the gold rush era. However, he found, as well as the other settlers, that there was more money in raising crops and livestock to sell to prospectors and to the people of Denver. With rich fertile land and abundant water from the South Platte River, farmers of Adams County established a growing agricultural economy that the county still depends on today.

In 1902, voters approved establishing Adams County and named the county after Alva Adams, a popular former governor who was in office at the time of the election. Daniel Carmichael, who is the founder of the city of Brighton in Adams County, housed the temporary county courthouse in his home. However, a fire destroyed the offices in January 1904 and the offices were relocated to a rented house at 3rd and Bridge Street in Brighton. On November 8, 1904, Brighton was chosen as the permanent county seat. The city of Brighton was growing and prosperous as well as the county and in 1906 a new courthouse was built at 4th and Bridge Street. That building still stands at the eastern half of the Brighton City Hall.
