Buying A Home In Arapahoe County Colorado?
Arapahoe County, Colorado is the state’s first county with one of the largest population of more than 543,000 people. Arapahoe County was named after the Arapaho Indians, one of the many plains Indians living in the territory. The word “Arapaho” means “tattooed on the chest” which was a practice of the Arapahoe Indians. Arapahoe County’s rich heritage includes Indians, trappers, gold prospectors, buffalo hunters, cattle ranchers, and famous people.
In the earlier days, Arapahoe County’s boundaries stretched east of the foothills into western Kansas and were almost half of the entire area of Colorado to the Kansas territory. In 1861, when Kansas was made a state, Colorado was made a territory with Arapahoe County as one of the 17 original counties.
Back in the mid-1800s, trappers, gold miners, farmers, sheep ranchers, buffalo hunters and cattle ranchers made up the population of Arapahoe County. In fact, in 1848 gold was discovered in Dry Creek that flowed into the Platte River. More gold was found down river in Cherry Creek and later a camp was set up called Denver.
Famous people walked the lands of Arapahoe County. Bat Masterson called Denver his home from the late 1800s to about 1902. He served as an Arapahoe County Deputy Sheriff. His longest time served was from Dec. 5, 1896 to Aug. 25, 1897. Arapahoe County records show that he also served sporadically at other times, being sworn in as a special deputy.
In May 1882, two Arapahoe County Deputy Sheriffs arrested the infamous Doc Holliday in downtown Denver. Holliday was arrested for murdering a man in Utah named Harry White. The deputies acted on information supplied by Perry Mallen who claimed to be a deputy sheriff from California. All claims by Mallen later proved to be false. Doc Holliday soon moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado where he later died and was buried. A cemetery marker still stands there today.
The city of Denver was the original County seat until 1902 when the city split off and became a separate county. In 1903, the City of Littleton became the new county seat and is still the county seat today. The County Administration Building is located at 5334 S. Prince Street in Littleton, Colorado.
