HISTORY
In 1891, Aurora, Colorado became a town on the eastern plains of Denver. Donald Fletcher, the founder of Aurora, originally called the town “Fletcher” after himself. He was a real estate tycoon and after two years setting up the town, he left the residents with bond payments for non-existent water. It seems that the new residents didn’t like Fletcher so they renamed the town Aurora, a Latin word for “dawn.”
The residents of Aurora struggled until 1921 when the US government chose the town of Aurora as a site for Fitzsimons Army Hospital. The hospital for military personnel treated soldiers affected by mustard gas and tuberculosis during World War I. In 1929, the state of Colorado recognized Aurora as a city. In 1942, the Army Air Corps built Buckley Field and Lowry Field enhancing the military presence in Aurora. In 1960, the Naval Air Station was renamed to Buckley Air National Guard Base.
In the 1970’s a new highway construction effort was started that linked Aurora to the nearby cities along the Front Range. However, in the 1990’s Aurora faced another economic disaster when Lowry Air Force base and Fitzsimons Army Hospital was closed. The city of Aurora turned to other economic factors to keep their city growing. Biotech companies moved into the old Fitzsimons Army Hospital as well as medical facilities. The city of Aurora is now a flourishing city with economic growth and residential communities.
STATISTICS
The city of Aurora, Colorado is the 59 th most populous city in the US. The estimated population in 2005 was 297,235. The area of Aurora is split among three counties – Arapahoe County, Adams County and Douglas County. T here are 105,625 households with an average household size of 2.60 people and the average family size of 3.19 people.
The median household income in Aurora, Colorado is $46,507, and the median income for a family is $52,551. The per capita income for Aurora, Colorado is $21,095. About 6.8% of families and 8.9% of the population are below the poverty level
Aurora ’s official elevation, conveniently posted on signs along the city limits, is 5,471 feet. However, the total area of Aurora differs in elevation of nearly 1,000 feet. The lowest elevation of 5,285 feet is found at the point where Sand Creek crosses the city limit in the northwest corner and the highest elevation of 6,229 feet is on the extreme southern border of the city in Douglas County, near the intersection of Inspiration and Gartrell Roads.
According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 142.7 square miles, of which 142.5 square miles are land and 0.2 square miles are water.
Interstate 70, Interstate 225 and E-470 beltway are the major highways throughout Aurora, Colorado. The Regional Transportation District’s light rail transit system was extended to serve the southwestern edge of Aurora in 2006 along with a comprehensive network of feeder buses in southern Aurora. An extension of light rail along I-225 through the city of Aurora is planned to connect with a commuter rail line between downtown Denver and Denver International Airport (DIA), both scheduled for completion by 2015.
Much of the Aurora area is more convenient to DIA than other cities and surrounding counties. This factor is expected to grow the accessibility of the E-470 corridor directly south of DIA to eventually accommodate 250,000 additional Aurora residents.

The John Gully Homestead House, DeLaney Farm Historic Districtlocated at 200 S. Chambers Rd. was built in 1870-1871. This small house is the oldest surviving home in Aurora. The ranch, house, stables and corrals that made up the Gully family homestead were originally located at Mississippi and Chambers Roads. The City of Aurora purchased the house and chicken coop, moved them to the current site and restored the house in 1982.

Built in 1918 with three sand greens it eventually evolved into 18 holes and tree-lined course. President Eisenhower declared this golf course as one of his favorites. The golf course can be played in four hours and is walkable.
Aurora’s Morrison Nature Center Located at Star K Ranch is a 200-acre natural area and outdoor learning center located along the Sand Creek Greenway. The area is located off Smith Road at the crossroads of Chambers Road and Airport Blvd.

The soft-surface Sand Creek Regional Greenway trail completes a loop of 50 miles of off-street urban trails in the northeast metro Denver area. The Sand Creek River served as a sanctuary for wildlife and stopping grounds for Native American Indians as well as a guide for frontier settlers. Sand Creek also was part of the history of industry and agricultural growth in Colorado.
