HISTORY
In 1861, the Colorado Territorial Session Laws created Douglas County, one of the original 17 counties in the Colorado Territory. Douglas County, Colorado was named after Stephen A. Douglas, an Illinois Senator known as the “Little Giant.” Stephen A. Douglas was a short man but a tough orator and debater. He battled his own Democratic Party, as well as the Republican Abraham Lincoln, over issues of slavery, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and popular sovereignty. Unfortunately, Stephen Douglas died five months before the county was established. Originally, Douglas County stretched from the Rockies to the State of Kansas border.
The county seat was established in Franktown but in 1863 was moved to California Ranch. In 1874, it was moved to Castle Rock, Colorado where it remains as the county seat.
Douglas County is filled with lightly wooded ponderosa pine and broken terrain of mesas and small streams. The Cherry Creek and Plum Creek flows north toward Denver and into the South Platte River. Both of these creeks were known to flash flooding and were responsible for the Denver flood of 1965. Cherry Creek Reservoir was built in the late 1960’s to control flooding.
STATISTICS
Douglas County, Colorado is virtually the geographic center of Colorado. The County is approximately 844 square miles, 71 square miles of which are permanently protected land through the Douglas County Open Space Program.
Douglas County is the eighth most populous of the 64 counties in Colorado. It is nicknamed “Dougco” and is located midway between Denver and Colorado Springs. The US Census Bureau estimated the population at 283,000. The annual growth rate of Douglas County is 4.5%. This makes Douglas County one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. There are approximately 60,924 households and 49,835 families residing in the county.
The median income for a household in the county was $82,929 and the median income for a family was $88,482. The per capita income was $34,848 with approximately 1.6% of familes and 2.1% of the population below the poverty line. In 2000, the US Censure Bureau stated that Douglas County has the highest median household income of any county or statistical equivalent.
HOUSING
There are five incorporated municipalities within the boundaries of Douglas County: Castle Pines North, Castle Rock, Larkspur, Lone Tree and Parker. Each has its own mayor and provides services in cooperation with Douglas County.

Cherokee Ranch and Castle located at 6113 N. Daniels Park Road, Sedalia, phone 303 688 5555 is one of Douglas County’s unique architecture that combines aspects of the Western United States and a Scottish-style castle. The Castle is a museum and a home to historic collections of fine art, furnishings and memorabilia from around the world. Art lovers often visit to see original drawings by Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The breathtaking views from the Castle show the magnificent snow capped Rocky Mountains.

Each year between the middle of June through the first week in August, you can take a magical tour back to the renaissance years, where boys dreamed of being a knight and women dreamed of being princesses. The festivities are located in Larkspur, Colorado off Interstate 25, halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs. Exit on 172 when coming north from Colorado Springs and exit 173 when coming from Denver. Travel time is 25 to 30 minutes from Denver or Colorado Springs.
Castle Pines Golf Club located at 1000 Hummingbird Drive, Castle Rock, phone 303 688 6022, is a members and guests only golf club. For over twenty years the Internationl PGA Tour was held in August at Castle Pines Golf Club on this Jack Nicklaus designed course. In 2007 the International cancelled the PGA tournament.
Devils’ Head Lookout located in Sedalia, Colorado was a wildfire lookout. It was rumored that William R. Kreutzer, a native of the Sedalia area and the first U.S. Forest Ranger, may have used Devil’s Head summit as a wildfire lookout. He served what was to become the South Platte District of the Pike National Forest between 1898 and 1905. In 1907, the newly created Forest Service planned seven principal lookouts along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains between New Mexico and Wyoming. Devil’s Head was chosen to be one of only four lookouts. The original lookout was constructed in 1919 and was replaced by the current one in 1951. It took 100 men and 71 mules to dismantle the old tower and construct the new one. Devil’s Head Lookout sits on a granite outcrop at the highest point of Rampart Range at an elevation of 9,748 feet. From this vantage point, fires can be easily spotted up to a distance of 75 miles away. Devils’ Head Lookout has been in continuous use since 1912 and is the last full-time Lookout in Colorado. Managed only during the summer months, this great attraction receives several thousand visitors each year.
Franktown Cemetery located at the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway 86 in Franktown was established in June 1870 and is one of the oldest, continuously used cemeteries in Colorado. With a number of historic headstones and grave markers, this cemetery uses a variety of materials and styles, including several ornately carved markers for members of two fraternal organizations of the woodsmen. The cemetery is the burial place for many pioneers of Douglas County and the State of Colorado. Clara Kelly was the first Douglas County resident to be buried in the cemetery in June 1870. James Frank Gardner who established “Frankstown” is buried there. He served as county clerk, and later, as treasurer. He also served as a territorial legislative representative, a state senator and a county commissioner. Other notable settlers buried in the cemetery include Jacob and Benedict Schultz, John Campbell, and members of the Kelty, Wheeler, and Brackett families.
PARKS SYSTEM
Douglas County, Colorado currently has an 84,000-square-foot recreation center; more than 2,400 acres of open space; 251 acres of parkland with 18 community and neighborhood parks; 34 miles of trails that include concrete and native surface; plus a national award-winning municipal golf course. Many of the parks are part of the Pike National Forest. Other parks systems include Roxborough State Park, Castlewood Canyon State Park and the Chatfield State Recreation Area. Douglas County offers great outdoor living and recreating opportunities.
Douglas County Parks and Trails Division maintains local and regional parks and regional trails. Some future plans include completion of the southern most section of the Cherry Creek Regional Trail and local linkages to this spine trail; additional construction of the trail on the East-West Regional Trail; development of more accessible on-road bicycle lanes; improvements to existing parks as well as additional fields.
