HISTORY of Jefferson County Colorado Mortgage
Jefferson County, Colorado rich history dates back to the 1850’s when gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains and the surrounding area. When the gold-seekers came to Jefferson County in 1858, there were fewer than 200 settlers in the area. Two years later nearly 35,000 people settled in the Jefferson County area. Both farmers and ranchers thrived in the area because they sold food and supplies to the mining towns scattered throughout the mountains.
In 1855, the Kansas Territory established Arapahoe County to include the area of eastern Colorado to the Continental Divide. However, in 1861 the Colorado Territorial Legislature formally organized Jefferson County. They named the county after the third U.S. President, Thomas Jefferson.
In the late 1850’s gold was discovered in and around Jefferson County. From the confluence of Cherry Creek and South Platte River to Idaho Springs, gold lined the pockets of prospectors. Mining camps were set up in Central City and Black Hawk and along the Hogback in Idledale as well as on Lookout Mountain and in Genesee. Three mining districts – Bergen District located in Bergen Park, Junction District located in Conifer and Mt. Vernon District located in Mt. Vernon Canyon- were formed and operated in central Jefferson County.
When Colorado became a territory, Jefferson County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Colorado Territorial Legislature. Golden City was named the capitol of the Territory of Colorado.
The history and success of any town or county in Colorado has always been based upon the history of the railroads. In December 1872, the narrow gauge section of the Colorado Central Railroad linked Denver and Golden with Central City through Clear Creek Canyon. In 1893, the Denver Lakewood and Golden Railway Company completed the first electric tramway to Lakewood and Golden from Denver. Later it became part of the Denver Tramway Corporation and was known as the “ Loop.”
A trip down the canyon to Denver by horse or wagon was a four-day outing with overnight stays in Golden and Denver. As a result, many enterprising pioneers built toll roads used for access from the mountain communities to the Front Range. The old Mt. Vernon Toll Road went from Denver to the present day Bergen Park. In 1860, the Genesee Toll Road was built that went up Mt. Vernon Canyon and on to the mines near Idaho Springs and Central City. Jefferson County in 1880 purchased many of the toll roads, they declared these roads as public highways and ended the era of toll road entrepreneurship.
Adolph Coors, Sr. founded Coors Brewing Company in 1880 and became the largest employer in the area – as it is still today. Dinosaur fossils were discovered in 1877 in the Morrison Formation along the Dakota Hogback near the town of Morrison in Jefferson County. This was the first major and important dinosaur discovery in North America.
In the early 1900’s, Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini purchased property on Lookout Mountain above Jackson Gulch. Here she built a summer home made out of stone to house Denver orphans. This home still stands today and is a popular tourist attraction. Another popular tourist attraction is the summer home of Charles Boettcher built on Lookout Mountain. Also on Lookout Mountain, Buffalo Bill Cody was laid to rest in June of 1917 near the Pahaska Tepee site.
In 1941, the Remington Arms Company ammunition factory was awarded a Federal contract and built a factory in Lakewood. The site today is the Denver Federal Center. In 1952, construction of Rocky Flats Atomic Energy Plant began in northern Jefferson County. Three years later Martin-Marietta Company now known as Lockheed-Martin Company built facilities in southern Jefferson County near Waterton Canyon.
Many notorious people either lived or visited Jefferson County throughout the early years. Deer Creek Canyon was a popular rest stop for Jesse James and Horsethief Thompson, a member of the notorious Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. Legend has it that Jesse James visited a family on Sampson Mountain and gave them a gold bar for their hospitality. Alferd Packer, Colorado’s alleged cannibal lived in the Deer Creek area. Local residents reported that Packer stayed in a dugout known as Colorow’s Cave following his parole from prison in 1901. Packer always maintained his innocence and he was well liked by his Deer Creek neighbors. He worked as a hired hand on many local ranches until his death in 1907.
Today Jefferson County, Colorado is one of the many growing and successful county’s in Colorado.
