PARKS SYSTEM
The Lakewood Department of Community Resources has six divisions that work together to provide for outstanding parks and recreational areas. With over 98 parks, four recreation centers, and miles of hiking and walking paths there is always fun and exciting outdoor activities for everyone.
William Frederick Hayden Park on Green Mountain has over 2,400 acres of open space and is the second largest park in Lakewood. Enjoy the challenging network of multi-use trails including a 13-mile loop at the summit of Green Mountain. The summit reaches 6,800 feet and offers unique and stunning views of the Denver Metropolitan area to the east, as well as high mountain peaks to the west. The majority of William Frederick Hayden Park was donated by or purchased from the Hayden Family since 1972. Once home to the buffalo, this park now provides rich habitat for a diverse array of wildlife including coyotes, hawks, rattlesnakes, bluebirds, rabbit, mule deer, and an occasional mountain lion.
Bear Creek Lake Park located at 15600 Morrison Road is both a park and campground facility. Come and enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, fishing, picnicking and camping on 2600 acres of open space. Sailboats, sailboards, canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, and bikes are available to rent Memorial Day to Labor Day at the Soda Lake Marina. Park rangers offer a variety of interpretive programs including nature guided hikes and weekly campfire programs in the summertime. Fifty campsites are available at the Indian Paintbrush Campground.
