HISTORY

Summit County, Colorado was one of the seventeen original Colorado counties founded by the First Territorial Legislature in November 1861. The county was named for the many mountain summits surrounding the county.

Prospectors, explorers and mountain men came to the region in the 1800’s seeking their fortune and adventure. Gold and silver mining kept the area prosperous. As a result, small towns were established and schools were built.

The area of Summit County to the south includes Fremont Pass and Hoosier Pass, Breckinridge, Copper and the Blue River.

To the east is the Eisenhower Tunnel, completed in 1973. This tunnel is sixty miles west of Denver, Colorado on Interstate 70. The tunnel is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, located at an elevation of 11,013 feet at the East Portal and 11,158 feet at the West Portal. It traverses through the Continental Divide at an average elevation of 11,112 feet and lies entirely within the Arapaho National Forest. The tunnel divides the two counties of Clear Creek County at the East portal and Summit County at the West portal.

The town of Heeney is located in the uppermost northern section of Summit County near Green Mountain Reservoir. The west or central area of Summit County includes Vail Pass, Vail, Dillon, Keystone, Dillon Reservoir, Silverthorne and Frisco.

Today, Summit County, Colorado is known for its excellent skiing, ski resorts, fishing, hunting and camping in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Summit County sits at 9,600 feet above sea level and is the 19 th most populous of the 64 counties in the State of Colorado. Located off Interstate 70, Summit County is approximately 75 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The total area of Summit County is 619 square miles of which 608 square miles is land and 11 square miles is water. The town of Breckenridge, Colorado is the county seat.

In 2005, the U S Census bureau estimated the county population was 24,892 people. There are approximately 9,120 households and 4,769 families residing in the county. The median income for a household in the county was $56,587 and the median income for a family was $66,914.

Officers Gulchjust off Exit 198 on the east side of I-70 is not a rest stop for either law enforcement or military. Officers Gulch was named after a prospector who mined the Ten Mile Canyon area back in 1885. Officer and a Mr. Scott also owned a lumber mill in Frisco. The wooden tower with an ore tram stood near the east side of the I-70 intersection, delivering ore from the Monroe Mine high above the rail stop at Officers Gulch. Remains of four huts are still here and in good shape. A small, clean and picturesque lake with a tiny island at one end lies at the base of a mountain on the west side of I-70 at Officers Gulch. This lake is a popular fishing destination. A trail goes around the water, hugging the shore and meandering off in the trees. Here you can see ruins of two-room cabins.

Montezuma Schoolhouse is located on the hillside east of Main Street in Montezuma. At 10,400 feet, the Montezuma Schoolhouse is one of the highest school buildings in the nation. This larger structure opened in 1884 has a belfry, bell and entry hall.

The Summit County Courthouse is located at 208 Lincoln Ave., Breckenridge, Colorado phone 970 453 3480 is between Ridge and French Streets. This stately courthouse is reminiscent of the Colonial Revival-style county courthouse. The sandstone steps and double glass doors leads you into a magnificent interior showcasing an octagonal main-floor hall with magnificent golden-oak staircase, custom-crafted woodwork and high ceiling with a spectacular chandelier. Hanging on all hallway and office walls are photos of historic sites and county “pioneers.” The favorite and largest room is upstairs and is the current BOCC Room that originally was the district courtroom. You’ll marvel at the “clusters of globes” hanging from the beautiful pressed-tin ceiling. Eight gorgeous windows let in plenty of light. The lower floor originally housed a one-cell jail and an apartment for the building’s custodian and his family. Now the only sign of a jail is the peephole through which jailers could see inmates.

PARKS SYSTEM

White River National Forest is approximately 75% of Summit County and offers endless recreational opportunities year-round from easy strolls on paved recreation paths to challenging double diamond ski runs. The White River National Forest is the most visited recreational forest in the nation with over 9.6 million people visiting the area. This is more visitors than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Parks combined. Elevations ranging from a high of 14,265 feet on Quandary Peak in the south to a low of 8,000 feet at Green Mountain Reservoir in the north, you’ll find exciting outdoor adventures.

Dillon Reservoir is located off Interstate 70 at the Silverthorne exit. The reservoir was completed in September 1963 and is the largest water storage facility in the Denver Water system. Building the dam required relocating the entire town of Dillon, Colorado and a hydroelectric plant. The project diverts water from the Blue River Basin through the Harold D. Roberts Tunnel under the Continental Divide, into the South Platte River Basin. Dillon Dam is an earth-fill dam, 5,888 feet long by 231 feet above the Blue River streambed. Dillon Reservoir’s surface area of 3,233 acres and 26.8 miles of shoreline support many recreational activities from boating, sailing to fishing. Several overlooks are available around Dillon reservoir to view the dramatic backdrop of the Gore, Williams Fork and Ten Mile mountain ranges.

Vail Pass National Recreation Trail is a designated National Scenic Trail offering many panoramic views of the Gore Range. Vail Pass Trail links to Ten Mile Canyon Trail at Copper Mountain. The trail is paved and approximately seven feet wide and is designed for multipurpose recreation including family activities, running and bicycling. It also serves as an access point for anglers and hunters.

The Golden Horseshoe is an 8,600-acre area northeast of the town of Breckenridge in unincorporated Summit County. Since 1997, the town of Breckenridge and Summit County Government acquired over 2,500 acres of private mining claims in the Golden Horseshoe including the B&B Mines. Part of the White River National Forest, the area’s natural and recreational resources and backcountry experience is an enjoyable outdoor adventure.

Summit County Recreational PathwaySystem is 55 miles of asphalt, non-motorizing pathway connecting towns and resorts throughout Summit County.
